FreeCell: how a round works

Bring your attention to one round of FreeCell. Build four suit foundations from ace to king. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

One face-up deck. Transfer capacity counts available cells and spare empty columns. Free solo play, no wagering.

Build familiarity through play

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Use the example to check your reasoning.

The objective of a round

Build four suit foundations from ace to king. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Start with a deliberate move.

Start here and follow along

  1. Build down in alternating colours; four cells each hold one card. Empty columns accept any legal group.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. A new-round button replaces the current round.

See the idea in action

With two empty cells and no spare empty column, a group of at most three cards can move together. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Notice this detail

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
