Getting started with Tangram

Start Tangram by looking at the playing area and its controls. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Something to practise

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

Aim for this result

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

The playing sequence

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Choosing and moving on screen

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. A new-round button replaces the current round.

An example before you play

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the controls nearby.

A mistake to avoid

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
