Canfield Solitaire: rules and examples

Choose a round of Canfield Solitaire and settle into its rules. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

Take a closer look while playing

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Keep the objective visible.

The purpose of your moves

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

From the start of a round

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Input guidance

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
